SATURDAY

All kick-offs 1500 GMT unless stated

Newcastle v Everton Newcastle v Everton (1245 GMT)

Newcastle just keep on going, and they passed a real test of their aerial defensive capabilities by beating Stoke on Monday. I was really impressed by how hard their midfield worked too, let alone their defenders.

But the Magpies' great start to the season has just built up the pressure. They will be expected to beat Everton but cast your mind back to when they played Wigan at St James' Park on 22 October. Everyone expected them to run the Latics over but, in the end, Roberto Martinez's side were unlucky not to get a point.

The Toffees have not had great results of late but have played better than a run of five defeats in six games suggests, and I am backing them to sneak a win here because I think the big problem for Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is stopping his team from thinking they just need to turn up to get the three points.

Football has a nasty habit of biting you on the backside just when you think you have cracked it, so Pardew and his players have to be careful. But, even if they are beaten on Saturday, it has been an exceptional start to the season and they are in a fantastic position ahead of their games with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea later this month.

Prediction: 1-2

Match preview

Arsenal v West Brom Arsenal v West Brom

You cannot yet say Arsenal are back as the team we used to know but they have started to play well and they are on a really good run.

I still think they have got innate problems defensively, though, whatever their form suggests. Their left-back Andre Santos is a good footballer but can be got at and I am totally unconvinced by Per Mertesacker in the centre, so having Thomas Vermaelen back fit is a big plus for them.

West Brom rolled over very easily against Liverpool last week. Baggies boss Roy Hodgson was unhappy with the penalty decision that led to the Reds' first goal but I think he will probably be just as unhappy about the way his side played.

Injured striker Shane Long, who does the work of two men, is a big miss for them at Emirates Stadium and I cannot see them getting anything from the Gunners.

Prediction: 2-0

Match preview

Aston Villa v Norwich Aston Villa v Norwich

This is an interesting one because Villa have just hit the buffers a bit after their good start.

Norwich, as I've said before, have coped really well with adjusting to life in the top flight and there is nothing wrong with their team spirit judging by their fightback to draw against Blackburn last weekend in a game they probably should have lost.

But I'm going to go for a home win for Villa because, although they are not playing particularly well right now, I think they might just have a bit too much firepower for the Canaries to deal with.

Villa have taken only one point from their last three games and have slid down the table a bit but I don't think their slump will become a permanent one. They have got a good manager in Alex McLeish and some good players. They will bounce back and they will be fine.

Prediction: 2-1

Match preview

Blackburn v Chelsea Blackburn v Chelsea

Chelsea are not without their problems, with the John Terry-Anton Ferdinand saga rumbling on, and they have obviously lost their last two league games as well.

But they are still a good side, especially if you consider how they played with nine men against QPR and that in all honesty they could easily have ended up beating Arsenal too - that 5-3 scoreline could have been even higher, but in favour of either side.

My only worry about the Blues at the moment is at the back. Terry could have played with anyone at the back three or four years ago but now he is struggling a little bit for pace and, all of a sudden, they need to be careful about who they put alongside him, especially if they are going to play with a high defensive line and push the full-backs on.

I was a bit surprised to read that Blackburn are considered massive outsiders by the bookies to win this one but then you remember that Arsenal are the only team they have beaten at home and they have lost their their other four games at Ewood Park.

I am going to go for a draw here, which I suppose represents progress for Rovers.

I was concerned to read that Blackburn are not going to allow their fans to protest before or during the game on Saturday, which is a very dangerous route to go down. If I was a fan and I wanted to protest, then I would. We are living in England and it is a free country - they should let their fans do what they want to do - why alienate your supporters when they are already unhappy? This will only make things worse.

Prediction: 1-1

Match preview

Liverpool v Swansea Liverpool v Swansea

Liverpool are on a good run and, with the amount of chances they are creating, they are due to beat somebody heavily. And unfortunately for Swansea, they might just be in the wrong place at the wrong time from their point of view.

The Welsh side got their first away point against Wolves a couple of weeks ago, but they will know it should have been three. I don't see any problem with them being reliant on their home form, though. It doesn't matter where your points come from, as long as you get enough to stay up.

I've met the Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins and he knows where his club is at. Everybody predicted they were going to struggle but they are quietly confident of staying up and I think they will be all right.

Prediction: 3-0

Match preview

Man Utd v Sunderland Man Utd v Sunderland

I was at Old Trafford on Wednesday night to see Manchester United beat Otelul Galati in the Champions League. They only beat them 2-0 and did not play well but it was a classic case of a good side playing against a very ordinary side and you knew United could score whenever they had to.

I don't often read the manager's programme notes but I did before that match, because it was United's first home game since their 6-1 derby defeat by Manchester City. Sir Alex Ferguson wrote that sometimes you need to experience failure before you can progress, which I thought was a really good line. He's right too.

They have now won their last three games since that City match, which is all they can do. Their win over Everton at Goodison Park last week was a huge one, and they will just be looking to keep the pressure on their neighbours at the top of the table.

As a manager, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has failed to beat Ferguson in a league match in 16 attempts. He needs a favour but he's not getting one here - knowing Fergie, he will play Danny Welbeck against his former side and I bet Welbeck will score twice.

Sunderland have a couple of former United players themselves in Wes Brown and Kieran Richardson who will be looking forward to going back to Old Trafford but I can't see them having too much joy here.

Ferguson celebrates his 25th anniversary in charge of United at the weekend, which is an incredible achievement. But I think he would be the first to admit that if he was starting out as manager at Old Trafford now and made the same start he did in 1986, then he would not last a year.

The United chairman at the time, Martin Edwards, not only made an extremely good appointment, he was very patient with him. He gave him as much time and money as he could to turn the club around. Since Ferguson cracked it, he has made the job look easy.

Apart from the trophies he has collected along the way, which speak for themselves, the greatest compliment I can pay him is that he plays attacking football - he has never been one to shut up shop, he always goes looking for goals.

Prediction: 2-0

Match preview

QPR v Man City QPR v Man City (1730 GMT)

Manchester City are having to deal with a quirk in the fixture list which means they have to follow every one of their Champions League games with an away trip in the Premier League.

You might say that they only have to play QPR, who Tottenham rolled over last week, but Rangers will be spoiling for a fight after having a week off. In Joey Barton and Shaun Wright-Phillips they have a couple of ex-City players who will be anxious to make a mark against their old club.

City will have to cope without the suspended Vincent Kompany at the back and there is a question mark over whether David Silva will play after suffering a back injury in midweek against Villarreal. Silva has been the catalyst for City recently and they might miss him, especially if QPR hold them up for the first 20 minutes or so.

This is a tougher game than it looks on paper but the thing about City is that they can be tough. They are good scrappers as well as having flair going forward. They will get chances at Loftus Road and I think they will end up taking the points too.

Prediction: 0-2

SUNDAY

Wolves v Wigan Wolves v Wigan (1330 GMT)

The worst thing that happened to Wigan boss Roberto Martinez last week aside from being beaten by Fulham is that his chairman Dave Whelan came out and said "I'm not going to sack him".

I don't think it's a good idea to say that. Yes, say how you are backing your manager and how he needs help - but he also needs some results. Too many times we've heard chairmen say they are not going to sack anyone and ultimately they do exactly that.

I don't mean that negatively to Whelan or Martinez but if they suffer another two or three losses in their next few games then you start to think about what needs to be done to keep the club in the Premier League. It would be at that time of year when changes are often made.

Wolves need a win too, of course, because they have got some tough games coming up. The thing about Mick McCarthy's side is that they seem to lack a bit of composure in the final third.

They play well in games, are hard to come up against and are well coached and well drilled. They make chances but they seem a bit edgy in front of goal, which is a concern for McCarthy.

Prediction: 2-1

Match preview

Bolton v Stoke Bolton v Stoke

Stoke looked really flat against Newcastle on Monday night. I've never thought they were just a route-one team but they definitely were against the Magpies and they weren't even very good at that.

They will need to be better than that to get anything from the Reebok, even with Bolton's horrendous home record.

This is a tough time for Wanderers boss Owen Coyle and it is hard to see at the moment where their goals are going to come from but, saying that, the first thing they need to put right is being better defensively.

Since Gary Cahill has been linked with all sorts of clubs he has been playing like Long John Silver - he might as well only have one leg - and he's been all over the shop.

Sometimes you have to give players a few home truths and get into them. Subconsciously he might still be thinking he could be playing for Arsenal, but he is playing for Bolton - and not very well right now.

Cahill has got to get his head down and start performing again, but they all have. I was reading the other day that Nigel Reo-Coker has had a go at a couple of his Bolton team-mates and that is the way you turn it around. You can only give them the carrot for so long - occasionally people have to come in and tell you, "You're only going one way at the moment and it's not the right way, so sort it".

I'm going for a draw here.

Prediction: 1-1

Match preview

Fulham v Tottenham Fulham v Tottenham

Fulham had a good win at Wigan last week and had a bit more of a goal threat away from home than usual.

This can be a funny fixture - there have been some mad results, with the Cottagers scoring four times in the first half in the FA Cup last season and Heurelho Gomes being badly at fault for a couple of goals in 2008 - but I'm still backing Tottenham to come out on top.

I've always said that they are the team most likely to finish fourth this season but they might be thinking they can finish third with the way they are playing at the moment.

As a five, the Spurs midfield and Rafael van der Vaart were absolutely brilliant against QPR on Sunday.

Scott Parker is their insurance policy, which is great for Luka Modric because he can just go and play. Then you have Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale with unbelievable pace down the wing and the cleverness of Van der Vaart.

Up front, Emmnauel Adebayor is still playing like he is in his honeymoon period, which has lasted a lot longer at Tottenham than it has done anywhere else. That says a lot about the way Harry Redknapp manages.

Tottenham have been to Russia and back this week for a Europa League tie but many of their first-choice players were left at home so it should not affect them too much.

Redknapp did not travel because of heart surgery but he hopes to be back in the dugout at Craven Cottage. Fingers crossed he will be all right and make a swift recovery.
