Atalanta - Inter |

Jose Mourinho’s men must quickly refocus on domestic business after the elation of securing their place in the Champions League second round.
Inter have to recover from their Derby d’Italia defeat, but a trip to local rivals Atalanta is far from an easy three points.
A win in Turin last Saturday would have taken the Nerazzurri 11 points clear of Juve and virtually ended the title race, however their dramatic defeat leaves them just five clear of the Bianconeri, and city rivals Milan are a point closer.
Captain Javier Zanetti nonetheless remains bullish about his side’s chances. “Those are important games, but the season wasn’t finished before and it will remain balanced until the end. Don’t forget that Milan are getting back into it too.”
The spice of local rivalry always makes this a tricky encounter. Never was this more evident than last term, when Atalanta embarrassed the eventual Scudetto winners with a thumping 3-1 win – one of only four defeats inflicted on the Serpenti all season.
The Orobici were three up within 33 minutes that day thanks to a Sergio Floccari strike and a double from the talismanic Cristiano Doni. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late reply was nothing more than consolation.
The boys from Bergamo are enduring a difficult season though. Their roster has the look of a top 10 team but they have struggled under Angelo Gregucci and his replacement Antonio Conte.
Conte may live to regret brashly stating that he would work for two years without pay if Atalanta were relegated. Only goal difference separates his side from the relegation zone at present, having lost six of their last seven League fixtures and crashed out the Coppa Italia with a home loss to minnows Lumezzane.
The Bergamaschi are without the injured Edgar Barreto and the suspended Jaime Valdes.
Inter meanwhile miss Davide Santon, Ricardo Quaresma, Walter Samuel and Dejan Stankovic through injury, and Sulley Muntari due to suspension.
Keep an eye on: Samuel Eto’o (Inter) – Eto’o has struggled to meet expectations this term and spent most of his time in strike partner Diego Milito’s shadow. He remains one of the world’s best though, and his goals in the Derby d’Italia and against Rubin suggest he is beginning to unleash the indomitable lion within him.

Catania hope newly appointed Sinisa Mihajlovic will be able to lead them to survival but face a tough relegation battle against Livorno. Neither side can afford to lose – there are much more than three points at stake in this clash.
The Rossoblu are living a nightmare. Gianluca Atzori was fired after their defeat to bottom of the table Siena and Mihajlovic has been asked to turns things around. But the Etnei have serious problems in their squad.
“I won’t change too much in this team,” said the Serbian. “I believe Atzori was really unlucky because Catania did play well and I am confident survival is a possible target. I like to play with four men at the back but then I will change the rest according to our rivals. Against Livorno we must win, after all we only need a couple of good results to climb up the table.”
The Amaranto are also in big trouble. But they have already used their ‘wild-card’ when they hired Serse Cosmi. The former Perugia man did improve things initially but it seems like this side needs much more than a new boss. Their home defeat to Chievo last weekend was far from impressive and the fans are getting seriously concerned.
“We fully deserved to lose,” admitted Cosmi. “We had the wrong attitude and paid for it. We were playing badly even before Cristiano Lucarelli got sent off. But of course that red card caused us even more problems.”
Mihajlovic is apparently going to play with Catania’s standard 4-3-2-1 formation. That means Jorge Martinez and Giuseppe Mascara will play behind Taka Morimoto. The Sicilians are still missing five players, including Pablo ‘El Pitu’ Barrientos, but have recovered Gianvito Plasmati who will sit on the bench.
Cosmi will be without his best-man Lucarelli for two weeks and Tomas Danilevicius will have to replace him. Antonio Candreva, who has been linked to Inter just recently, will play alongside Nico Pulzetti behind the lone striker.
Keep an eye on: Giuseppe Mascara (Catania) – Topolinick hasn’t done enough so far and needs to step up his form. He is clearly Catania’s best player so he should make the difference, especially when it comes to playing against relegation rivals.

Chievo - Fiorentina |

Stadio Bentegodi |

Fiorentina should be on top of the world following their last-gasp 2-1 victory over Liverpool, sending them through to the second round of the Champions League. Cesare Prandelli’s team topped their group with a hugely impressive five wins and one defeat to their name, in what looked a very tricky set of fixtures when the draw was made.
Their League form has, in contrast, been somewhat more inconsistent, although they have picked up three wins in their last four, lifting them back up to fifth in the table having dropped as low as tenth in recent weeks.
Chievo have based their relative success this season on a miserly defence, which have conceded just 16 goals this season, just three more than leaders Inter. Goals have been at a premium, on the other hand. Nonetheless, they sit comfortably in eleventh position and a victory this weekend will see Domenico Di Carlo’s men go level on points with their opponents.
Prandelli’s side are looking stronger than they have done in recent weeks with the likely returns of Marco Marchionni and Stevan Jovetic to the starting line-up. The attacking triumvirate behind Alberto Gilardino has such as impact on the way the team play, and with Marchionni and Jovetic working in tandem with the fantastic Juan Vargas, Viola supporters can be hopeful of making it four wins in five.
Di Carlo’s team will have plans of their own, however, with dangerman Sergio Pellissier looking to improve on his season tally of four goals. The Chievo captain had such a good campaign last year that he was rewarded with an international cap last May against Northern Ireland – a game in which the 30-year-old scored just minutes after coming off the bench.
Long-term absentee Adrian Mutu continues to miss out for the Viola, along with Azzurri centre-back Alessandro Gamberini, influential midfielder Cristiano Zanetti and the versatile Massimo Gobbi
Joint top-scorer Michele Marcolini is ruled out through suspension for the Flying Donkeys, while their backline is lacking Fabio Moro, Frenchman Nicolas Frey and on-loan Empoli defender Felice Piccolo.
Keep an eye on: Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina) – His last-minute winner at Anfield sparked jubilant scenes for the away side and their support. Gila seems to be hitting the back of the net more regularly now after a slow start to the season and any defence should be wary of the threat he possesses.

Lazio - Genoa |

Stadio Olimpico |

A meeting of two clubs who traditionally live in the shadow of their more famous neighbours, but in recent times there have been signs of that situation changing. Genoa have been matching Sampdoria every step of the way while the Biancocelesti lifted the Coppa Italia last term as Roma slipped out of Italy’s top four.
However, things have not been so good for Lazio this term. Even with their bitter rivals struggling they have been unable to take advantage of the situation and went down to a defeat against their nemesis in last week’s derby. That result was the thirteenth consecutive time the Laziali have watched their side fail to record a win in Serie A this term and Coach Davide Ballardini must be on his final chance.
While Lazio’s problem has been scoring goals – just three in their last 810 minutes of League football, and one of those was an own goal – the Rossoblu have been scoring for fun. Ten goals in their last four matches are part of their total of 28, that tally matches second placed Juventus and is only bettered by leaders Inter.
When the two clubs faced off last season it ended in a 1-1 draw. Diego Milito opened for Genoa before Ousmane Dabo equalised with 10 minutes to go, but Milito did not leave the Olimpico a hero as he had also missed a penalty earlier in the game.
Hernan Crespo will hope he is given the chance to rise from the bench at some point to face his former club. The Argentine netted 39 goals in 54 games for Lazio at the start of the decade and would relish the chance to keep his impressive tally up for his current club – thus far he has four goals from eight games.
Julio Cruz is still suspended after his tussle with Napoli’s Leandro Rinaudo, but this will be the last game he misses for Lazio. Midfielders Roberto Baronio and Stefano Mauri also miss this one in order to serve a ban. Meanwhile, the injury list contains midfielders Riccardo Perpetuini, Francelino Matuzalem, Christian Manfredini and striker Simone Inzaghi.
The visitors have less selection worries. Only defender Andrea Esposito, Moroccan midfielder Houssine Kharja and Serb striker Bosko Jankovic have been making visits to the club doctor this week.
Keep an eye on: Raffaele Palladino (Genoa) – Has scored three in Genoa’s last four and worked his way back into Marcello Lippi’s Italy plans. Will be eager to keep up this streak over the coming months in order to keep himself in with a chance of visiting South Africa next summer.

Milan - Palermo |

Now just four points off the leaders, Milan go looking for a sixth win on the bounce against a Palermo side in flux.
They may have done the bare minimum in the Champions League, scraping through with a 1-1 draw away to FC Zurich, but there can be no doubts on the Rossoneri’s current Serie A form. Since hitting upon the right tactical system in the 2-1 win over Roma on October 18, Leonardo’s men have notched up seven victories and a stoppage-time 2-2 draw at Napoli. The display against Sampdoria last week was so powerful that Vice-President Adriano Galliani declared it was “a different sport” to the rest of Serie A.
However, the loss of Thiago Silva for two months with a calf strain could be devastating, as he has formed a magnificent centre-back pairing with Alessandro Nesta. The only alternatives are Kakha Kaladze and Giuseppe Favalli, as Daniele Bonera, Oguchi Onyewu and right-back Massimo Oddo are also injured.
At least Gianluca Zambrotta returns from suspension, while Mathieu Flamini should give Massimo Ambrosini a rest in midfield. Leonardo doesn’t like making too many changes to his starting XI and tiredness could take its toll.
Palermo have begun their revival under new Coach Delio Rossi, fighting back to beat Cagliari last week and sweeping through to the next phase of the Coppa Italia too. Walter Zenga may have gone, but the basic problem remains and that is a dismal away record of just one win, a single draw and five defeats.
Their history at San Siro doesn’t bode well either. Last season’s 3-0 result was their 19th defeat in 22 visits to Milan, having also drawn two and won one on October 22, 2006. In these games they scored 13 and conceded 56, including a 9-0 thrashing in 1950-51.
Fabrizio Miccoli won his appeal to have the two-match ban for dissent reduced to one, so he is able to partner Edinson Cavani and Rossoneri January transfer target Fabio Simplicio. Giulio Migliaccio was not so fortunate and is suspended for this tie, but Fabio Liverani returns from his stint on the naughty step.
Keep an eye on: Ronaldinho (Milan) – He converted the penalty that put Milan through in the Champions League midweek and has been on sparkling, albeit typically inconsistent, form. No doubt the Brazilian will try his tricks to confuse the Palermo defenders and set up teammates Marco Borriello and Alexandre Pato.

Parma - Bologna |
|
Stadio Tardini |
|
|
|
The local derby sees two rivals on opposite ends of the table, as Parma are flying high in fourth place and Bologna are fighting off relegation.
Francesco Guidolin’s men keep on surprising, as last week’s 2-2 draw away to Genoa kept the newly-promoted side in the Champions League positions. He has achieved this despite the long-term injuries to McDonald Mariga, Alessandro Manzoni, Andrea Pisanu and Stefano Russo.
Valeri Bojinov and Alberto Paloschi have missed the last few games too, but should be at least fit for the bench. They are well covered with veteran Nicola Amoruso and Jonathan Biabiany, who last week broke his Serie A duck with a brace. Christian Panucci will start despite the negative headlines of the last few days following his altercation with Genoa President Enrico Preziosi.
Bologna are doing much better of late under Coach Franco Colomba, as even with a defeat they won’t be dropped into the relegation zone this weekend. The tactician has to make changes, though, as Daniele Portanova sits out a ban. Vangelis Moras, Massimo Mutarelli and mid-season signing Stephen Appiah are all on the treatment table and unable to make the trip.
Federico Casarini, 20, was given a chance in midfield last week and proved effective in the 2-1 victory over Udinese, his Serie A debut, so he should keep his place even though Nicola Mingazzini has completed his ban. The defence is revamped with Andrea Raggi and Miguel Angel Britos in the centre-back positions, but Salvatore Lanna is also a doubt with a muscular problem in training.
It’s a very special game for Marco Di Vaio, who had the best years of his career at the Stadio Tardini. From 1999 to 2002 the veteran bagged 41 Serie A goals for the Ducali, including 20 in just 33 games for his final season there. Last term he went so close to the Capocannoniere title, but so far this season he has scored only three times.
Home advantage could play a big part in this game, as Parma have picked up 16 of their total 25 points at the Tardini thanks to five wins, a draw and a single defeat against Cagliari on September 27. Curiously, that was also the last weekend that Bologna picked up a point on their travels. The Rossoblu are without a win away after three draws and four defeats, during which they have scored a total of four goals.
Keep an eye on: Martins Adailton (Bologna) – The free-kick specialist has been largely responsible for Bologna’s revival, netting four goals in only nine Serie A appearances. The 32-year-old Brazilian also provides valuable assists and could be inspired at the Tardini, having started his Italian career with Parma in 1997-98.

Siena - Udinese |

Stadio Franchi |

One game can often turn an entire season around and Siena’s 3-2 victory over Catania gives them spirit ahead of Sunday’s clash with Udinese.
What made Sunday’s victory all the more remarkable is that Siena twice went behind but never gave up, coming back with real style.
Alberto Malesani has tweaked the way his side plays, changing the formation from a 4-3-2-1 with a diamond to a more orthodox yet attacking 4-3-3.
His methods finally look to be paying off and last week’s training camp in Borghesiana is being credited with the success.
“At training camp the players ran like missiles,” Malesani said. “In the first half they seemed like road signs. Then after the interval you saw the Siena I trained during the week.
“This is an important success, but we need to reinforce the defence if we are to survive.”
Udinese will test that backline although they will be without Serie A top scorer Antonio Di Natale who is missing in controversial circumstances.
The 32-year-old was booked after criticising and then threatening the referee following the Zebrette’s 2-1 defeat away to Bologna on Sunday.
The League’s disciplinary commissioner later banned Di Natale for two games, angering Udinese President Giampaolo Pozzo.
It’s not the first time Di Natale has been suspended this year and Pozzo is now questioning whether his team needs such a player.
He even expressed his desire that Italy boss Marcello Lippi isn’t watching the situation unfold as Di Natale could lose his place in the World Cup squad.
Di Natale aside, Udinese are struggling for consistency this season. They have only won one of their last five games and currently lie 14th in Serie A.
Keep an eye on: Reginaldo (Siena) – The 26-year-old Brazilian made his name in Italy as a striker for Fiorentina and Parma, but he has been reinvented as a full-back by Alberto Malesani and played a key role in Siena’s second win of the season against Catania at the weekend.
